Best API for Janitor AI: What Each Model Costs Per Chat
DeepSeek V3 is the best value API for Janitor AI at about $7.50 a month, because Janitor re-sends your whole context as input on every message and DeepSeek costs a tenth of GPT-4o. The catch nobody writes down: janitor+ 5x context multiplies that bill by 4.6. Every rate read at source on 2026-09-15.

Short answer: for most people the best API for Janitor AI is DeepSeek V3, and the reason is arithmetic rather than taste. At 25 cents per million input tokens it costs about a tenth of GPT-4o and a twelfth of Claude Sonnet 4.5, while still holding a 163,840-token context window. If prose quality matters more to you than the bill, Claude Sonnet 4.5 is the better writer by a clear margin and you should expect to pay roughly twelve times as much for it. Every rate quoted here was read from OpenRouter's public model price list on 15 September 2026.
The part almost every "best API for Janitor AI" post gets wrong is not which model to pick. It is how the billing actually works. Janitor re-sends your entire conversation as input on every single message, so the cost of a chat is dominated by the context you are carrying, not by the reply you are reading. That one fact changes the answer, and it is why the same model can cost you $7.50 a month or $34.50 a month with no change to your habits.
How much does each API cost per message?
Here is the calculation nobody seems to publish. One Janitor message costs your context size multiplied by the model's input rate, plus your reply length multiplied by its output rate. Janitor's own subscription FAQ, updated 25 June 2026, puts the free tier context at "around 9k tokens" and says janitor+ gives you five times that, so roughly 45,000. A roleplay reply runs about 250 tokens. At 100 messages a day, which is a heavy but realistic session, the monthly bill looks like this.
| Model | Per message, free tier context | Per month at 100/day | Per month at janitor+ context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mistral Nemo | 0.02 cents | $0.54 | $2.59 |
| Llama 3.3 70B Instruct | 0.10 cents | $2.94 | $13.74 |
| GPT-4o mini | 0.15 cents | $4.50 | $20.70 |
| DeepSeek V3-0324 | 0.25 cents | $7.50 | $34.50 |
| DeepSeek R1-0528 | 0.50 cents | $15.11 | $69.11 |
| Grok 4.6 | 1.95 cents | $58.50 | $274.50 |
| GPT-4o | 2.50 cents | $75.00 | $345.00 |
| Claude Sonnet 4.5 | 3.07 cents | $92.25 | $416.25 |
Look at the last column. Raising your context fivefold multiplies the bill by about 4.6 on every model in the table. The upgrade that makes your companion remember last week is the same upgrade that quadruples what you pay per message, because the extra memory is re-transmitted as input every time you hit send. No setup guide mentions this, and it is the single most expensive thing to not know.
What is the best API for Janitor AI if you want to spend as little as possible?
Mistral Nemo, at 1.9 cents per million input tokens. That is 54 cents a month at the usage above, which is close enough to free that the decision stops being financial. The trade is real though: Nemo is a small model and it shows in long roleplay, where it loses track of who said what and drifts out of character faster than DeepSeek does. Llama 3.3 70B at $2.94 a month is the better value floor for most people, and it holds a scene noticeably better.
If you want genuinely zero, OpenRouter publishes free variants of several models, DeepSeek included. Its rate limit documentation, read 15 September 2026, caps those at 20 requests a minute and 50 requests a day. Spend $10 in credits once, at any point, and the daily ceiling rises to 1,000 requests permanently. OpenRouter also states that it governs capacity globally, so creating extra accounts or extra API keys does not raise your limit. That $10 is the best value purchase in this entire article.
Is DeepSeek still the best API for Janitor AI?
For the money, yes, and it is not close. DeepSeek V3-0324 sits at $0.25 per million input tokens against $2.50 for GPT-4o and $3.00 for Claude Sonnet 4.5. It writes competently, it stays in character across long sessions, and its context window is larger than either of those. The honest caveat is that DeepSeek's prose has a recognizable rhythm once you have read a few thousand messages of it, and some people find it repetitive in a way Claude is not.
DeepSeek R1 is a different proposition and worth skipping for roleplay. It is a reasoning model, which means it spends output tokens thinking before it answers, and at $2.15 per million output tokens that thinking is billed to you. You get $69 a month instead of $34 for writing that is not better at this particular job.
Do I need an API key if I pay for janitor+?
No, and this is where a lot of money gets wasted. A janitor+ subscription costs $12.99 a month, confirmed on Janitor's own newsroom announcement dated 24 June 2026 and on Apple's in-app purchase list where it appears as the only product the app sells. For that you get the 5x context, priority replies and monthly swipes with frontier models, running on Janitor's own infrastructure with nothing metered underneath.
Compare that to the table. If you want janitor+ level context, running DeepSeek yourself costs about $34.50 a month, GPT-4o about $345 and Claude about $416. The subscription is cheaper than every one of them. An API key only makes financial sense if you are staying at free-tier context on a cheap model, or if you specifically need a model Janitor does not host and are willing to pay for the privilege.
There is a third route that launched on 30 July 2026 and that most comparison pages have not caught up with. janitor+ Router lets subscribers use third-party models inside Janitor with no API key at all, billed per token on top of the $12.99, with 10 percent off some popular models and $5 in launch credits that expire a year after you claim them. Janitor's own help article, updated 6 August 2026, is blunt that Router is an addition rather than a replacement and that its own model is still the recommendation for everyday chat. Those Router credits are non-refundable, as are the subscriptions themselves.
What are the best Janitor AI API settings?
The setting that costs you money is context size, and the default is usually too high for what you are doing. If you are three messages into a fresh chat, you are paying to re-send a context window that is mostly empty scaffolding. Trimming context to what the scene actually needs is the only lever in the API settings panel that changes your bill, and it changes it proportionally.
The second lever is model switching by session rather than by preference. A lot of people set Claude once and leave it, which is how a $12 hobby becomes a $400 one. Running a cheap model for everyday back and forth and switching up only for scenes you care about is where the real saving lives. If you are running several metered AI services at once and have lost track of what they collectively burn, it is worth putting your recurring usage spend somewhere you can actually see it before the next billing cycle rather than after it.
Are proxies allowed on Janitor AI?
Yes, explicitly. Janitor documents proxy setup in its own help center, including a step by step OpenRouter and DeepSeek walkthrough, and its Router article states that Router is offered as an alternative to proxy setups and not a forced migration. Bringing your own key is a supported path.
One clarification worth making because the search results are genuinely misleading on this. Several of the pages ranking for "Janitor AI proxy" are companies that sell residential and datacenter IP proxies, and they describe a Janitor proxy as something that hides your IP address or bypasses geo-restrictions. That is a different product entirely. What Janitor calls a proxy is a reverse proxy URL that routes your prompt to a model provider. Buying an IP proxy will not run a single message for you. We priced all of this out in more detail on our Janitor AI proxy cost breakdown.
Is a flat plan cheaper than running Janitor AI on an API key?
We sell a flat plan, so treat this with appropriate suspicion, and here is the straight version anyway. If you are content on DeepSeek at free-tier context, a proxy at around $7.50 a month genuinely undercuts most flat plans, and you should do that. The moment you want janitor+ context, or a frontier model, or simply a bill you can predict without doing token arithmetic, the calculation flips and it flips hard.
The thing that is easy to underrate is variance. Per-token billing means a quiet week costs almost nothing and a weekend where a story really lands costs more than your subscription. Most people do not discover their own usage pattern until the invoice arrives, which is the same dynamic that makes token and credit meters across companion apps so hard to budget for.
What we do differently
Beauties.ai has no API key to paste, no proxy URL, no wallet to top up and no context tier sold back to you at a multiple. Six girlfriends are already written and illustrated, each with her own personality and way of texting, and the plan price is the entire bill whatever you send. You can switch between them whenever your mood changes. We are tasteful by design and we are not a nude or NSFW generator, which is a real and deliberate difference from the Limitless side of Janitor. If you want the comparison laid out properly, we keep an honest Janitor AI alternative page that says where Janitor wins too. Adults 18 and over.
How these numbers were worked out
So you can check them rather than take our word for it. Per-token rates come from OpenRouter's public model list read on 15 September 2026. Context figures come from Janitor's own subscription FAQ, updated 25 June 2026, which states roughly 9,000 tokens on the free tier and 5x that on janitor+. We assumed a 250-token reply and 100 messages a day. Change any of those assumptions and the totals move, but the ranking between models does not, because it is set by the published rates. Model prices on OpenRouter do change and providers get added and dropped, so re-check before you commit a budget to any of this.
