Janitor AI proxy cost: what a DeepSeek API key, an OpenRouter setup and the new janitor+ Router really charge per message
Short answer, and it is not the one the setup guides give you. A Janitor AI proxy is not free and it is not a flat fee. You pay per token, every message re-sends your whole chat history as input, and that input side is where almost all the money goes. Running DeepSeek V3 through OpenRouter at Janitor's free-tier context of roughly 9,000 tokens costs about a quarter of a cent per message, which is near enough $7.50 a month at a hundred messages a day. Put the same model behind janitor+, which gives you five times the context, and the identical usage costs about $34.50. Claude Sonnet 4.5 on the same math is $92 a month at free context and $416 at janitor+ context. Those figures come from OpenRouter's public model price list, read on 15 September 2026.

That multiplier is the thing nobody writes down. Everyone tells you the 5x context upgrade makes your roleplay better, and it does. Nobody mentions that because Janitor re-sends the entire context window on every single message, five times the context is roughly four and a half times the bill on any pay-per-token route. The upgrade that improves your chat is the same upgrade that quadruples your proxy spend.
What makes her feel real
Janitor AI proxy cost, the way it should feel
Five times the context is 4.6 times the bill
Janitor re-sends your whole chat history as input on every message, so the context limit is really a price multiplier. The same DeepSeek setup that costs $7.50 a month at the free tier costs $34.50 once janitor+ raises your context fivefold. Better memory and a bigger bill are the same setting.
The cheap model advice is right, and incomplete
DeepSeek really is cheap at 25 cents per million input tokens. Claude Sonnet 4.5 is twelve times that and GPT-4o is ten times. Picking the model is the single biggest cost decision you make, and it swings the monthly bill from 54 cents to over $400 on identical usage.
Here the plan price is the entire bill
One flat figure from $9 to $39 a month, six girlfriends already written and illustrated, no API key to paste, no wallet to top up and no context tier that quietly multiplies what you pay. Multiply by twelve and you have the year.

How the per-message figures were worked out, so you can check them. Each Janitor message re-sends the conversation as input and generates a reply as output, so the cost of one message is the context size times the input rate plus the reply length times the output rate. We used Janitor own stated free-tier context of about 9,000 tokens, its stated 5x multiplier for janitor+ giving roughly 45,000, a 250-token reply, and 100 messages a day. Change any of those and the numbers move, but the ratio between models does not. Three things in Janitor favor, because the comparison should be honest. The free tier is real, permanent and unusually generous, and Janitor has said plainly that the version people already use stays free. It priced janitor+ to roughly break even on GPU cost rather than to squeeze anyone. And Router removes the single worst part of the proxy experience, which is pasting API keys between services. Two caveats on our own numbers. OpenRouter rates change and providers are added and dropped, so re-check before budgeting. And the janitor+ web checkout sits behind a human-verification wall, so the $12.99 figure here is Apple in-app purchase disclosure cross-checked against Janitor own announcement rather than a reading of the web checkout.
