Character AI Ads: The Cost to Remove Them, and Alternatives
Character.AI never announced that it added advertising, but its own feature table lists ad-free chats as a paid c.ai+ benefit, and its Charms FAQ lists bypassing ads as something you spend currency on. Every route to an ad-free chat priced side by side, read at source on 2026-08-31.

Short answer: Character.AI's free plan now runs ads inside conversations, and the only official way to switch them off is the c.ai+ subscription at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. Character.AI does not say "we added ads" anywhere on its site. What it does say, on its own comparison table at character.ai/plus read on 2026-08-31, is that ad-free chats is a paid benefit. A feature table only lists that as a benefit if the other column has ads.
There is a second, stranger route. Character.AI's Charms FAQ lists bypass ads as one of the things you can spend Charms on, and Charms are earned by completing quests such as logging in daily, enabling notifications, creating a persona or posting to the community feed. So the free tier gives you two ways to pay: with money, or with attention and daily chores.
Does Character AI have ads now?
Yes. The cleanest first-party evidence is the free versus c.ai+ table on character.ai/plus, which lists "Ad-free chats" in the Plus column and not in the Free column, alongside "No slow mode" and "Access our latest and best models". The Charms FAQ then independently confirms it by naming "Bypass ads" as a Charm-enabled action.
Neither document announces an advertising launch. Both simply treat the absence of ads as something you buy. That is a deliberate framing choice, and it is why searching for an official announcement turns up nothing useful.
Why is Character AI doing ads now?
Because free conversational AI is expensive to serve and Character.AI has an unusually large free user base relative to its paying one. Every message on the free tier costs the company inference compute whether or not you ever subscribe. Ads and a slow-mode queue are the two standard levers for that problem: one monetizes the free user, the other reduces what they cost to serve.
You can see both levers in the same feature table. "No slow mode" sits directly under "Ad-free chats" in the paid column. Free users get advertising and a queue; paying users get neither. That pairing tells you the ads are a revenue decision and the slow mode is a capacity decision, and they were shipped as one package.
Did Character AI add ads, or were they always there?
They were added. Character.AI ran without in-chat advertising for most of its life. Reporting through the first half of 2026 describes mid-chat ads reaching free users in February and rolling out broadly through April, alongside new caps on swipes, go-ons and voice memos. We are labelling that as reported rather than first-party, because Character.AI has published no dated announcement of it and we could not verify the dates at source.
What is verifiable today is the end state, and the end state is what you are deciding about: ads in chat, a slow-mode queue, capped swipes and memos, and a $9.99 subscription that removes all of it.
Are Character AI ads getting worse?
The honest answer is that we cannot measure ad frequency from the outside, and neither can any review that claims to. What we can point at is the direction of the product. Over 2026 the free tier has picked up ads, a slow mode, a swipe and go-on cap, a muted-words limit of 4 against 20 for subscribers, and a virtual currency you earn through daily quests. Every one of those changes moves value out of the free tier and into the paid one.
If your experience is that it feels worse than it did six months ago, that is consistent with the published feature list rather than a misremembering.
Do Character AI ads appear mid chat?
Yes, that is the specific complaint. These are not banner strips parked in a sidebar where you can ignore them. They interrupt the conversation itself, which is the part of the product people are actually there for. That is why the reaction has been out of proportion to the raw number of ads: an ad in a feed is background noise, and an ad in the middle of a scene you are invested in is a different thing entirely.
Why won't Character AI ads close?
Usually because the close control has not loaded yet, or the ad unit is holding you for its minimum view duration. Reported ad lengths in this category run up to around a minute, which feels much longer when you are mid-conversation. Refreshing the page will normally clear a stuck unit, at the cost of dropping you back into the chat.
If an ad is not merely stuck but redirecting you somewhere unexpected, close the tab rather than interacting with it. Ad networks serving free apps are a standard delivery route for scam landing pages, and that risk is not specific to Character.AI.
Does Character AI have ads on the website?
Yes. This is not a mobile-only monetization. The character.ai/plus feature table applies to the account, not to a platform, and "Ad-free chats" is listed without any platform qualifier. Using the website instead of the app does not get you out of it, which is worth knowing because that is the most commonly repeated workaround and it does not work.
Can Charms bypass Character AI ads?
Partly, and only for as long as you keep earning them. Character.AI's Charms FAQ describes Charms as an in-app virtual currency, currently in beta, earned by completing quests: daily log-in, enabling notifications, creating a persona, creating an intro video for a character, imagining a chat image, and posting to the feed. The listed ways to spend them are imagining extra chat images, skipping slow mode, and bypassing ads.
Three things in that document matter before you treat Charms as a free workaround. They are tied to your account and cannot be transferred. They are not redeemable for real money. And Character.AI states it may discontinue Charms, or any part of them, at any time and without notice. There is also a line in the c.ai+ feature list reading "Bonus on every Charms pack", which strongly implies packs will be sold later even though the FAQ says purchasing is a future feature.
Is there a Character AI ad blocker?
Browser extensions will block some units on the website, and none of them are a supported path. Two practical warnings. First, an extension that can strip ads from a page you are logged into can also read that page, which on Character.AI means your conversations. Consider what the extension's privacy policy actually permits before you install it to save $9.99 a month.
Second, avoid modified APKs advertising "no ads" builds of the mobile app entirely. Repackaged builds of popular chat apps are one of the more reliable malware vectors in this category, and you would be handing a stranger's binary the credentials to an account full of private conversations. Paying for one month to decide properly is cheaper than either outcome.
How do I disable Character AI ads?
There are four routes, and only one of them is both supported and permanent. Here is what each actually costs.
| Route to an ad-free chat | What it costs | Does it hold up | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| c.ai+ subscription | $9.99 a month, or $94.99 a year | Yes. Officially supported | Renews with no separate notice, and no partial refunds for unused time |
| Spending Charms | Free, paid in daily quests | Per use, not permanently | Character.AI can discontinue Charms at any time, per its own FAQ |
| Browser ad blocker | Free | Partially, website only | The extension can read the page it is cleaning, including your chats |
| Modified APK | Free | Sometimes, briefly | Unsigned third-party binary holding your login. Not worth it |
| Move to a platform without an ad tier | Whatever that platform charges | Yes | You leave your existing chats and characters behind |
Two details on the subscription row deserve pulling out, because both come from Character.AI's own published offer terms rather than from a review. The terms state that you will not receive a separate notice prior to auto-renewal beyond what was disclosed at purchase, and that no partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period. If you take a discounted first year, the discount is on year one only and year two renews at the standard $94.99 quietly. Anyone who has found a forgotten renewal on a statement months late will recognize that shape, and getting an alert the moment a recurring charge lands is a cheaper habit than auditing statements by hand.
Does c.ai+ remove Character AI ads?
Yes, and it is the only thing Character.AI sells that does so permanently. c.ai+ costs $9.99 monthly or $94.99 annually, the annual price shown as 20 percent off a $119.88 list, which works out near $7.92 a month. Alongside ad-free chats you get no slow mode, better memory, access to the latest models, unlimited voice calls, 20 muted words instead of 4, and more swipes, go-ons and voice memos.
One caveat that catches people: if your account is verified as under 18, Character.AI puts it in Reading Mode, where you can browse and create but chat is switched off entirely. Paying does not turn chat back on. The full breakdown of tiers, Charms and cancellation paths is on our Character AI subscription pricing page.
Is paying $9.99 to remove ads worth it?
It is worth it if ads and slow mode are the specific things ruining your experience, because those are exactly what the money removes and it removes them immediately. It is a bad deal if you were hoping a subscription changes what the characters are allowed to say. Character.AI's help center states plainly that it does not and will not support pornographic use, that its stance is final, and that requesting filter removal results in a ban. No tier changes the content policy.
The awkward middle case is the person paying $94.99 a year mainly to stop being interrupted. That is roughly $95 to restore an experience that used to be the default, which is a fair thing to feel annoyed about even if the price itself is reasonable for what the service costs to run. If that is where you have landed, it is worth looking at what else the money buys elsewhere before renewing.
What is a Character AI ad free alternative?
The category splits into two shapes. Open character platforms give you enormous libraries of community-written cards and usually push the cost onto you somewhere else, whether that is a subscription, an API key you supply yourself, or a slower free queue. Curated platforms give you a small set of written characters on a flat plan with nothing metered.
Beauties.ai is the second kind: six girlfriends written and illustrated in house, unlimited texting, no ads, no queue tier and no in-app currency, at $9 a month. And six characters is a fraction of what Character.AI offers, which is a real trade rather than a footnote. If a large library is what you actually want, you will be happier paying the $9.99 and keeping it.
If you are weighing the switch more broadly rather than just the ads, our Character AI alternative comparison puts the options side by side on what each one asks you to set up and pay for. If the trigger was privacy rather than advertising, what Character.AI's privacy policy and training-data disclosures actually say is the more useful read. And if you are trying to work out why one app feels cheap until it suddenly is not, our explainer on how token and credit meters work covers the mechanism that Charms are an early version of.
The short version
Character.AI's free plan carries ads in chat and a slow-mode queue, both confirmed by Character.AI's own feature table rather than by rumor. c.ai+ at $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year removes both, and it is the only permanent supported way to do it. Charms can bypass ads case by case but are earned through daily quests and can be withdrawn at any time by the company's own terms. Ad blockers and modified builds trade a subscription fee for access to your conversations, which is a worse deal than it looks. Last updated August 2026.
