Chai vs Character AI Pricing, Memory and Which Plan to Buy

Short answer: Character AI is the cheaper subscription and Chai is the looser one. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and the new c.ai Lite tier is $4.99 a month. Chai sells two separate products: in the app, Premium is $13.99 a month or $134.99 a year and Ultra is $29.99 a month or $19.99 a week; on the website, Pro is $159.99 a year or $9.99 a week. Chai says it is for adults and allows user-made mature content. Character.AI filters sexual content. If you want the cheapest paid year, Character AI wins by a wide margin.

Every price below was read on 9 October 2026 from the vendors themselves: Apple's US App Store in-app purchase lists for CHAI (Chai Research Corp.) and Character AI (Character Technologies, Inc.), Chai's own pricing and FAQ pages on chai-ai.com, and character.ai/plus. Yearly totals are our arithmetic, multiplying weekly prices by 52 and monthly prices by 12. Where a vendor does not publish a figure, we say so instead of borrowing one from a review site.

Chai vs Character AI price, plan by plan

Two things stand out. Character AI has a simple ladder: free, Lite, c.ai+. Chai has two price lists that do not talk to each other. And the cheapest way into each one is very different: $2.49 a week for c.ai Lite against $9.99 a week for Chai's web Pro, four times as much for the entry plan.

Apple's list for CHAI also shows an item called "Premium Membership" at $9.99 with no billing period, which neither Chai's site nor its FAQ explains. We have left it out of the totals rather than guess what it buys.

Is Chai or Character AI better?

Character AI is better for most people who want a big character library, voice calls and a low price, and Chai is better for adults who want fewer content limits. Character.AI runs one of the largest libraries of user-made characters, includes Character Calls for every user, and charges less at every paid step. Chai's FAQ calls the service adult only and says some user-made characters carry mature themes, which is the main reason people move from one to the other.

Chai's own FAQ answers this question in its favour, saying it serves over 51,000 models from its own GPU cluster while Character AI runs a single underlying model. That is the vendor's claim, not something we could test, and model count is not the same as reply quality. In the App Store the two are close: CHAI holds 4.2 stars from 289,145 US ratings, Character AI 4.3 from 559,470.

Does Chai or Character AI have better memory?

Character AI has the better published memory tools, and Chai publishes no memory figures at all. On Character.AI, free users get 15 memory pins, Lite and c.ai+ get 30, and c.ai+ adds the best memory tier plus Facts memory, which stores short facts about you. Chai's pricing and FAQ pages promise "endless conversations" and its most advanced models on Pro, but give no context size, so any number you see for Chai memory comes from a reviewer's test, not from Chai.

In practice this matters most for long roleplays. If a character forgets your name or the plot after an hour, Character.AI lets you pin the facts that matter. On Chai, the only lever is paying for a bigger model on web Pro, and Chai says a web Pro reply uses about eight times the compute of an average app user's.

Chai app vs Character AI, and why the Chai app is a separate purchase

This is the detail that costs people money. Chai's FAQ says, word for word, that "Chai Web Pro and the Chai App are products of Chai Research Corp. They are separate platforms with no data sharing between the two." Pay for Ultra on your iPhone and the website still treats you as a free user. Pay for Pro on the web and your app chats stay on the free tier. Character.AI does not split itself this way: one c.ai+ subscription covers the app and the website.

So before comparing prices, decide where you actually chat. If it is mostly on your phone, compare App Premium at $13.99 with c.ai+ at $9.99. If it is mostly in a browser, compare web Pro at $159.99 a year with c.ai+ at $94.99 a year. Chai also says its website works in any mobile browser, so the app is not the only way to use it on a phone.

Chai vs Character AI cost over a year

The weekly rows are where the money goes. Weekly billing is meant for someone who wants a plan for a few days and cancels. Kept for a year, Chai's weekly web Pro costs about 3.2 times its own annual plan, and weekly Ultra costs more than a thousand dollars. Character.AI's weekly Lite is the only weekly plan in this comparison that stays cheap, and even it costs more than twice the monthly Lite price over a year.

If you already use Chai on the web and keep hitting rate limits, CHAI MAX is a third bill on top. MAX Auto charges $0.66 per 1,000 tokens generated. At 150 tokens a reply, 50 replies a day comes to about $148 a month before the Pro subscription, which is why MAX Monthly at a flat $90 is the better buy for heavy users. Is Chai more NSFW than Character AI?

Yes, Chai allows more mature content than Character AI. Chai's FAQ says the platform is intended for adult users only, that characters are made by its community, and that some may contain mature themes, with automated filters and manual review on top. Character.AI's policy does not allow graphic sexual content, and since 24 November 2025 it has removed open-ended chat for users under 18 in the US, checking age with its own model, then a selfie, then ID as a last step.

Neither one is an explicit app in the way some adult companion sites are. If explicit roleplay is the whole point, neither of these two is the right purchase, and paying for c.ai+ will not change Character.AI's filter. Is Chai down more often than Character AI?

Neither company publishes a status history we could compare, so there is no honest answer in numbers. Both have had bad evenings, and both communities post about them. If a nightly chat is part of your routine and you want to know whether the site itself is down or it is just your connection, a site uptime checker answers that in a few seconds instead of a refresh loop. It is also a fair reason not to pay a year up front for either one before you have used it through a few busy weekends.

How do I cancel Chai or Character AI, and can I get a refund?

Cancel where you subscribed, and expect no refund for time you already paid for. Chai's FAQ says you cancel web Pro from your account settings and keep Pro until the end of the billing period. Character.AI's terms say no partial refunds are issued for unused time. Anything bought inside either app is billed by Apple or Google, so the cancel switch and any refund request go through your App Store or Google Play subscriptions screen, not the developer.

Which one should you buy?

Buy c.ai+ yearly at $94.99 if you like Character.AI's characters and want memory pins, no ads and no slow mode for the least money. Buy Chai's App Premium yearly at $134.99 if you chat on your phone and want looser content rules. Avoid weekly billing on both unless you are sure you will cancel within a couple of weeks, and do not buy a Chai plan on one platform expecting it to work on the other.
