Short answer: Character AI is cheaper and gentler, Janitor AI is looser and more expensive once you pay. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, and Character.AI added a $4.99 Lite tier on 28 September 2026. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month and has no yearly plan, so a year is $155.88. Janitor is adults only and allows tagged romantic and sexual bots. Character.AI is 17+ in the App Store, filters sexual content and removed open-ended chat for under-18s in late 2025. If you mostly want one romantic companion you can text every day, neither price is the whole story, and the comparison below shows why.

Every figure here was read on 8 October 2026 from the vendors themselves: Apple's US App Store in-app purchase lists for both apps, Google Play, character.ai/plus, Character.AI's blog, Janitor's help center at help.janitorai.com and its changelog. Yearly totals and per-month figures are our arithmetic from those numbers. Where a page could not be read at the source, we say so instead of filling the gap.

Two things stand out. Character.AI now has a ladder (free, Lite, c.ai+) and Janitor has one paid step. And Janitor's only price is monthly, so the gap widens over a year: $94.99 against $155.88 is a $60.89 difference before anyone buys Charms or loads a Router wallet.

Is Janitor AI better than Character AI?

Janitor AI is better for adults who want unfiltered roleplay and control over the model, and Character AI is better for people who want a huge character library, voice calls and a cheaper plan. The deciding question is content. Janitor's terms say the service is for users 18 and over, and bots with romantic or sexual themes must be tagged Limitless. Character.AI's policy does not allow graphic descriptions of sexual acts, and that filter is the most common reason people leave it.

Janitor is not a free-for-all either. Its terms ban sexual content involving minors, including fictional ones, plus gore, bestiality and sexual violence, and avatars cannot show explicit nudity. Some comparison pages say Janitor has no filter of its own. That is wrong, and it matters if you are about to pay for it expecting anything goes.

The memory row is where the two products really differ. Janitor's help center puts free context at around 9k tokens and says janitor+ gives five times more, without printing a janitor+ figure, so roughly 45k tokens is an inference rather than a published number. Character.AI sells memory as tiers of features (pins, Facts memory, lorebooks) rather than raw context. If your roleplay keeps forgetting the plot after an hour, janitor+ attacks that directly. If you want the bot to remember a short list of facts about you, c.ai+ does that for less money.

Is janitor+ worth it compared with c.ai+?

janitor+ is worth it if you run long roleplays on Janitor and keep hitting the memory wall, because five times the context is the one thing you cannot get any other way on the free plan short of paying for your own API. c.ai+ is worth it if ads and slow mode are what annoy you, and Lite is now the cheaper fix for that. Neither one changes the content rules of the site you are on.

There is a cost trap on the Janitor side that the subscription price hides. Plugging your own model in through a proxy or the Router means paying per token, and a roleplay chat sends the conversation back to the model with each message, so longer memory means a bigger bill per reply. We priced that per message in what a Janitor AI proxy really costs, and the short version is that at janitor+ context, the $12.99 plan with Janitor's own model is often cheaper than running DeepSeek or GPT yourself. If you are choosing a model, our list of the best API for Janitor AI compares them by cost per message.

Which is safer, Janitor AI or Character AI?

Character AI has far more age and safety machinery, and Janitor AI has far fewer restrictions. Character.AI removed open-ended chat for under-18 users in the US from 24 November 2025 and checks age with an in-house model, then a selfie, then ID as a last step. Janitor says it is for adults only, and runs ID-based age checks only for users in Australia, Brazil and the UK.

Reliability is a separate kind of safety. Janitor's own changelog for August and September 2026 lists a day of elevated model errors, a slowdown for janitor+ replies, a memory test that leaked to all users and wiped some memories (about 15,000 were restored), a character search outage and a stretch of site instability. Character.AI's blog covered a busier product year instead: new models in April and September, a memory update, lorebooks, comics and image models, and on 18 September 2026 the news that its CEO was leaving to join Disney, with the company saying the app is still live. Neither record is a reason to avoid either one. Both are reasons not to buy a year up front on impulse.

Our longer write-up of Character AI age verification covers the selfie and ID steps if that is what is holding you back.

Does Janitor AI have an app?

Yes. Janitor now has official iOS and Android apps, called Janitor: Interactive Stories, from JanitorAI, Inc. The iOS app is rated 18+ and its only in-app purchase is janitor+ Monthly at $12.99. Romantic and explicit bots are switched off by default in the apps and have to be enabled in a setting on the website. Character.AI's app has been out much longer and has 559,437 US ratings on iOS, but only 2.2 stars from 2.45 million reviews on Google Play.

A small tip if you are trying to keep these straight: the companies behind them are Character Technologies, Inc. and JanitorAI, Inc., and if you subscribed inside an app, the charge comes from Apple or Google instead. Cancel where you subscribed. Janitor's web plan cancels under Settings, Billing, Manage Subscription, and Character.AI's under Settings, Account, Manage. Our guide to cancelling an AI girlfriend subscription walks through each store.

Can I get a refund from Janitor AI or Character AI?

Rarely. Janitor's subscription FAQ says payments are generally non-refundable, its terms rule out partial refunds, and Router credits are final sale and can expire 365 days after purchase. Deleting a Janitor account also cancels any credits without a refund. Character.AI's offer terms say no partial refunds are issued for unused time, and App Store purchases on either service are refunded by Apple or Google, not the developer.

What if you want one companion, not a roleplay engine?

Both of these are built for range. Character.AI is a library of millions of user-made characters, and Janitor is a roleplay engine you can point at any model. A lot of people comparing them are really after something narrower: one romantic companion with a personality that does not drift, who remembers them, and a bill that does not change with how much they talk.

That is what Beauties.ai is for. Six girlfriends written in house, each with her own memory of your chats, unlimited texting with no token meter or proxy bill, and one published price: $12 a month, or $9 a month billed yearly, which is $108 a year against $155.88 for janitor+. We are tasteful by design, so if explicit roleplay is the point, Janitor fits you better and we would rather say so. If steady company is the point, a Janitor AI alternative with a flat price or what c.ai+ really buys you are the next two reads, and the pricing page shows every plan before you sign up.

One last idea for people who use roleplay as practice rather than romance: if what you are really rehearsing is a job conversation, a tool built for running mock screening interviews will push back the way a recruiter does, which no companion bot is designed to do.
