Cancel Character AI Subscription and Replika: Refund Rules

Short answer: cancelling either one takes about two minutes, but where you cancel is decided by where you originally paid, and that same fact decides whether you can get any money back. Character.AI cancels through a Customer Portal reached from account settings if you subscribed on the website, and through Apple or Google if you subscribed in an app. Replika cancels through the gear icon in Settings, or through the store, or through PayPal. Deleting the app cancels nothing on either platform.

The part almost nobody tells you up front: Replika states that all purchases are final and non-refundable, and Character.AI's own offer terms state that no partial refunds are issued for unused time within a billing period. So on both products the money you already paid is generally gone, and the thing you are actually buying with the next two minutes is the next charge. Every policy below was read on each company's own help center on 5 September 2026, and every price was read at its source rather than copied from a review page.

How do I cancel my Character AI subscription?

Character.AI's published route depends entirely on how you signed up, and the company splits its own instructions the same way.

If you subscribed on the website, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage. If your plan shows a Manage button, clicking it takes you to a Customer Portal. You enter the email address on your Character.ai account and a secure link is sent to it. Character.AI's own guidance is worth quoting because it saves a support ticket: check both your inbox and your spam folder, and if the link has not arrived within five minutes, verify the address is correct and that the subscription really was started on the website. Click the log in button in that email and you can end c.ai+ from the portal.

If your plan screen says it is managed by an app store instead, the website cannot touch it. That is not a bug and no amount of clicking in the browser will help. You cancel it where you bought it, on the Apple App Store or on Google Play, and the change takes effect there.

How do I cancel my Replika subscription?

Open the Replika app, or go to my.replika.com and sign in. Tap the gear icon in the top right to reach Settings, tap Subscription, then tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. If you paid through PayPal, that path will not stop the money: you log in at paypal.com, go to Settings, then Payments, then Manage Automatic Payments, and cancel the agreement there.

Replika publishes a confirmation step that is genuinely worth doing, because plenty of people believe they have cancelled and have not. On Android, open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, go to Payments and Subscriptions, then Subscriptions, and check whether Replika still appears under Active. On iOS, open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, and look for Replika under Active. If it is still listed, it is still running, whatever the app told you.

Does deleting the app cancel the subscription?

No, on both products, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in this category. Replika says it in as many words: deleting the app does not cancel your subscription, renewals happen automatically unless you cancel ahead of time, and if you were billed after deleting the app it is because the subscription was still active. Store-managed subscriptions in particular carry on until you cancel them inside the store, no matter what happens to the app on your phone.

Deleting your account is a different action again, and it is the destructive one. On Candy.ai, for example, deleting the account before the renewal date does cancel the subscription with it, but it also permanently removes your chats, images and characters, while a plain cancellation leaves all of them intact. The safe order on every platform in this category is the same: cancel first, confirm in the store that the renewal is off, and only then decide whether you want the account gone. Can I get a refund from Character AI or Replika?

Read the last two rows together, because they are the harshest rule in the category and almost nobody quotes it. Candy.ai does offer a refund window, which is more than either of the others, but it closes after 24 hours, it closes early if the account has spent more than 20 tokens, and it never opens at all for anyone who paid with anything other than a debit or credit card.

The one route that genuinely does produce refunds is the app stores. Apple and Google both run their own request processes and both of them sometimes say yes, particularly on a charge that renewed within the last few days. Replika points customers there explicitly and states it cannot process refunds or subscription changes itself for store purchases. So if you bought in an app, ask the store, not the vendor.

What does Character AI Plus cost, and what does Replika cost?

Worth knowing before you cancel, because if the plan is cheaper than you remembered the sensible move might be to keep it.

One caveat that has to travel with those Replika figures. Apple discloses the amounts and, for some of them, a period label, but it does not tell you which point is the current advertised price of which tier. There are two monthly points and two annual points, which usually means a promotional rate sitting alongside a standard one. Treat them as confirmed price points rather than as one advertised fee, and read the actual number in your own account before you make a decision on it.

Will I get a warning before it renews?

Not from Character.AI. Its published offer terms state that you will not receive a separate notice prior to auto renewal beyond what was disclosed when you bought. Replika is equally direct in the other direction: renewals happen automatically unless cancelled in advance, and the responsibility to cancel before the renewal date sits with you.

That is the mechanism behind most of the anger in this category. A subscription bought in a moment renews silently twelve months later, at a price nobody re-read, on a card nobody checks line by line. If you keep several of these running at once, the practical defence is not willpower, it is a calendar reminder set for the day before each renewal date rather than finding out on a statement three weeks later.

Why did I get billed after deleting my account?

Replika answers this one directly, and its answer applies almost everywhere. Automatic renewal is on by default. Subscriptions bought through Apple or Google keep running until you cancel them in the store, regardless of what you did inside the app. So a charge after deletion nearly always means either the store subscription was never cancelled, or the deletion happened after the renewal had already processed.

If neither of those explains it, the productive move is a support ticket rather than a chargeback. Vendors in this category typically ask for the email on the account and the last four digits of the card so they can identify the payment. A bank dispute usually closes the account outright, which ends any chance of the vendor refunding you voluntarily and destroys your chat history in the process.

Can I switch from Pro to Ultra without cancelling?

On Replika, no. Its own guidance is that in order to change subscription plan you have to cancel the previous one and let it run out first. The same applies if you want to move your billing from Apple to Google or the reverse: you cancel on the current platform and subscribe again on the new one. Replika does confirm that Pro access itself works across both iOS and Android whichever store you bought it in, so the restriction is about billing rather than access.

There is a related trap for anyone who bought on the web. Replika states that Pro status cannot be moved to a new account if it was purchased through Stripe in the web version, unlike store purchases which can be restored on a fresh account. What happens to my chats when I cancel?

Cancelling and deleting are different, and only the second one destroys anything. Cancelling ends the billing and drops you to whatever free tier exists, with your history still on the account. Replika adds a caveat worth reading if you were planning to cancel and come back later: it describes Free Use as available at no cost with limited access, and says access to it may be denied at Replika's discretion. That is an unusual thing to publish, and it means a free account is not a guaranteed place to park your companion between subscriptions.

Is it worth cancelling, or should I downgrade?

Work out what you were actually paying for. If memory was the reason you subscribed, downgrading is not a saving, it is a different product.
