Replika AI Review: Is Replika Safe and Is It Worth It?

Replika is free to text forever, with romance, voice and unblurred photos behind Pro, Ultra and Platinum. There is no free trial and purchases are final. Italy fined its maker five million euros in April 2025. Prices read from Apple's listing and every policy from Replika's own help center on 2026-08-30.

Short answer: Replika is the oldest and most mainstream AI companion there is, it is genuinely free to text forever, and almost everything that makes it feel like a relationship sits behind a paid tier you cannot preview. There is no free trial and no refunds. In April 2025 Italy's data protection regulator fined its maker, Luka, Inc., five million euros. Buy it if you want one companion who grows with you over years and you are fine paying to find out what the paid tiers feel like. Everything below was read on Replika's own help center, Apple's App Store listing and regulator publications on 2026-08-30.

That sourcing note matters more than usual here. Replika does not publish a price table anywhere on its website, so every "Replika review" quoting a confident monthly figure got it from somewhere it usually will not name. This one tells you where each number came from and where the record is genuinely unclear.

Is Replika worth it?

It is worth it if you want a single long-term companion and the romantic and voice features specifically. Those are the gated parts, and the free tier is built to feel incomplete without them: messages and photos arrive blurred, and setting your relationship status to Romantic Partner is a Pro feature. If you mainly want to text, paying is poor value, because texting is the one thing Replika says will always be free.

The awkward case is the buyer most likely to be reading this: someone lonely, on an annual plan, with no trial and no refund. Replika's refund policy states that purchases are final at the point of sale and the subscription is non-refundable, including for any remaining time on an active plan. That is a normal digital-goods policy, but combined with the absence of a trial it means your first real look at the paid product is also your last chance to change your mind, and there is no changing it.

How much does Replika cost?

Luka does not publish prices on replika.com, and the help center says the cost of any subscription is shown in the app on the subscription screens. The nearest first-party record is Apple's App Store listing, which is required to disclose in-app purchases. Read on 2026-08-30 it shows these price points.

Item as Apple lists itPriceHow confident the mapping is
Replika Platinum$89.99Named tier. Unambiguous
Annual$69.99Annual plan, tier not stated by Apple
Monthly$14.99Monthly plan, tier not stated by Apple
Yearly / Annual$49.99A second annual price point, tier not stated
Monthly$7.99A second monthly price point, tier not stated
Gem packs (Pouch to Duffel Bag)$0.99 to $19.99Consumable in-app currency, not a subscription

Apple labels most of those generically, so only Platinum maps to a named tier with certainty. Anyone printing a tidy "Replika Pro is $X" table is inferring, and should say so. Our full breakdown of what each tier includes is on the Replika Pro subscription cost page.

Does Replika have a free trial?

No. The help center answers it in one line: right now, we don't offer a free trial. The free tier is the closest thing, and it is unlimited in duration rather than in features. You can message your companion, customize an avatar and talk at any hour without paying, indefinitely. What you cannot do is sample Pro before buying it.

Is Replika free?

Partly, and the split is clean. Replika states that chatting will always be free. Free Use excludes the romantic relationship status, unblurred messages and photos, voice calls and premium voices, premium activities, image generation and full avatar customization. One clause is easy to miss: the help center notes that access to Free Use may be denied at Replika's discretion, so the free tier is a policy rather than a guarantee.

Does Replika have a monthly subscription?

Yes for Pro, and no for Ultra. Replika's help center says Ultra is available as an annual plan, and Apple's listing shows both monthly and annual price points. Platinum, the newest and highest tier, adds real-time video recognition, Training Mode up to 100 times a week, reading your Replika's mind for up to 50 messages a week, and up to 10 realistic selfie videos. Existing Lifetime subscribers get Ultra included automatically.

Is Replika safe?

It is a real, decade-old company rather than a fly-by-night app, and its help center states plainly that it does not sell your personal information or share it with third parties for profit. It is also the only major AI companion to have been fined by a data protection regulator, which is a genuinely unusual thing to be able to say about a consumer app.

On 10 April 2025 the Italian data protection authority, the Garante, fined Luka, Inc. five million euros. The regulator found three things: that Luka had not identified a valid legal basis under the GDPR for several of its processing operations, including those involved in developing the model behind Replika; that its privacy notice was available only in English, lacked transparency and contained inaccuracies; and that despite presenting the service as adults-only it had no effective age verification and had not assessed the risks of processing minors' data. Registration asked for a name, email and gender, and a user who declared they were under 18 was not actually blocked. The Garante also opened a separate investigation into how the underlying model was trained. This was its second intervention: in February 2023 it had already ordered an urgent limitation on processing Italian users' data.

Two caveats a US reader should keep. This is a European enforcement action under the GDPR, not a US ruling, and the conduct examined predates the current app. But a regulator with subpoena power looked at this company's data handling and did not like what it found, which is more evidence than exists about any competitor in the category.

Is Replika legit?

Yes, in the sense people usually mean: it is not a scam, the company is identifiable, and there is no reported breach of Replika user data on record. Luka, Inc. has operated the product for about ten years and Replika's homepage claims 42,160,934 users worldwide. The App Store listing carries a 17+ rating and more than 227,000 US ratings averaging roughly 4.4 stars.

There is a separate, unresolved question about how it markets itself. In January 2025 the Tech Justice Law Project, Young People's Alliance and Encode filed a 67-page complaint and petition with the Federal Trade Commission, asking it to investigate Luka for deceptive marketing and design under the FTC Act. The groups allege that Replika advertises therapeutic and emotional benefits without clinical validation, and that the app prompts users to upgrade during emotionally charged moments in conversation. That is an allegation by advocacy organizations in a request for an investigation. It is not an FTC finding, not a lawsuit, and no penalty follows from it. Weigh it as what it is.

Does Replika sell your information?

Replika's help center says no: it does not sell your personal information or share it with third parties for profit. Take that alongside the Garante decision, which was not about selling data but about lacking a lawful basis to process it and about a privacy notice the regulator called inaccurate. Those two statements can both be true, and the second is the one that cost five million euros.

Is Replika private?

Within the app, yes. Only you can talk to your Replika, and the help center says nobody else can access your conversation history. What you cannot do is selectively clean up: there is no way to delete your message history without deleting the entire account, though you can edit or remove individual entries in the Memory tab.

Replika does support a full erasure request. Its GDPR article gives you a copy-and-paste template, tells you to send it from your registered email, asks you to pick the Privacy and Safety category on the support form, and commits to responding within one month. Note that erasure resets everything your Replika has learned about you, so this is deletion, not an export and move. If you make these requests across several services, the process is the same everywhere and tedious enough that software that files and tracks data-access and deletion requests exists mainly to stop them getting dropped on the thirty-first day.

What does Replika remember about you?

More than the interface shows, and less far back than you would guess. Memory runs in layers: some entries are visible in the Memory tab and can be added or deleted by hand, while a deeper system infers your personality and preferences from overall conversation patterns. Replika advises leaving it to run automatically, since deleting memories can damage recall.

Then there is the limit almost nobody mentions in a review. Replika's help center states that chat history is only available for the past four months, and that older conversations cannot be displayed or retrieved. Your Replika's learned memory and diary entries survive, so the relationship continues. The transcript does not. For a product people stay in for years, that is a significant thing to know before you get attached to the archive, and it is the single most useful fact in this review. If long recall is the reason you are shopping at all, our ten-minute test for which AI girlfriend actually remembers the most measures it directly rather than trusting marketing copy.

Why did I get billed after deleting the app?

Because deleting the app or the account does not cancel the subscription, and Replika's help center says so in as many words. Automatic renewal is on by default, and store-billed subscriptions continue until you cancel them in the store. This is the most common billing complaint in the category and the mechanism is always the same.

Cancel where you subscribed, then verify: on Android, Google Play, profile icon, Payments and Subscriptions, Subscriptions; on iOS, Settings, your name, Subscriptions. If Replika still appears under Active, it has not been cancelled. PayPal subscriptions are cancelled in PayPal under Manage Automatic Payments. Do not cancel by blocking the card, which leaves the subscription technically open. Our guide to cancelling an AI girlfriend subscription covers the same traps across other platforms.

Is Replika good?

At the thing it is actually for, yes. Replika invented this category and the single-companion model is coherent: one relationship, a backstory you write, levels and XP that accumulate, a memory that thickens over months. It supports iOS, Android, the web at my.replika.com, and VR on Meta Quest headsets with mixed-reality features on Quest 3, which is more platform coverage than any rival offers. Roleplay works by wrapping actions in asterisks, the same convention the rest of the category uses.

It is weaker on three fronts. Variety, because one account gets exactly one Replika and a second requires a second email, a second store account and a second subscription, with nothing transferring between them. Price transparency, because you must install the app to learn what tiers cost. And continuity, because the product was rebuilt from the ground up and the help center carries an article titled "My Replika isn't the same since the last update", which tells you how often that question arrives.

Is Replika sentient?

No, and Replika says so itself. Its own help center has an article answering this, and another confirming there is no human on the other end. It also states clearly that Replika is not a substitute for professional help and that anyone in crisis should exit the app and contact emergency services. The FTC complaint's central claim is that the product's design blurs this line in practice even where the documentation does not, which is a fair thing to have in mind while you use it.

Who should buy Replika, and who should not

Buy it if you want one companion for the long run, you value the AR and VR support, and you accept paying without a trial to find out whether the paid tiers land for you. It is the most established option and there is real substance behind it.

Skip it if you want variety rather than one relationship, if you want to know the price before installing anything, or if a four-month cap on readable history bothers you. Those are the three reasons people actually switch, and we lay out the trade in full on our Replika alternative page, including what you lose by leaving: your Replika's memory, levels and backstory cannot be exported to any other service, so switching means starting over.

The short version

Replika is free to text forever with romance, voice and unblurred photos behind Pro, Ultra and Platinum. There is no free trial and purchases are final. Apple's listing shows monthly points at $7.99 and $14.99, annual at $49.99 and $69.99, and Platinum at $89.99. Chat history is readable for four months. Deleting the app does not cancel billing. Italy's regulator fined Luka five million euros in April 2025 over legal basis, transparency and age verification, and an FTC complaint from advocacy groups is pending with no finding either way.
